A recent report concludes that the Threemile Canyon Industrial Dairy complex - with its 55,000 cows and 5.6 million pounds of ammonia per year - is contributing to the degradation of the Columbia River Gorge.
Ammonia from the dairy combines with particulates from the PGE Boardman coal-fired power plant and funnels into the Gorge when the winds blow from east to west in the winter. The result is acid rain and haze, some of the worst pollution found in the Pacific Northwest.
And for the Gorge air, it doesn't appear to be getting any better anytime soon.
